Assistant Manager, Engineering

Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift

Position Summary:

Assist the director in supervising and directing the work activities of employees engaged in the maintenance and engineering functions of the hospital, including upkeep of buildings and grounds; plumbing; electrical wiring; carpentry; painting; masonry; steam generation; and general repairs of machinery and equipment.

• Ensures the safe efficient operation of the physical plant of the hospital and its utilities.
• Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of all buildings, grounds and distribution systems for the facility.
• Inspects equipment on a routine basis for quality assurance and for fire and safety issues.
• Assists in the supervision of new construction or remodeling projects, including the management of the project cost.
• Orders materials and negotiates pricing with vendors for replacement parts.
• Maintains a well arranged storeroom with an adequately stocked inventory to prevent delays in repairs.
• Makes work assignments to personnel to effectively utilize the available skill and knowledge and to maintain the overall effectiveness of the department.
• Conducts performance appraisals, counsel employees on work performance and discharges discipline as prescribed in the labor contract.
• Trains new employees in proper work methods in performing assigned duties.
• Trains new employees in the proper methods in repair and maintenance of equipment.
• Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Director of Engineering for improvements to the physical plant and the Engineering Department.
• Maintains an accurate preventive maintenance program.
• Coordinates work activities with other department managers in the hospital to accomplish department needs.
• Prepares equipment incident reports for the Safety Committee and Risk Management on a quarterly basis.
• Investigates equipment incidents and generates the follow through report to the Safety Department and to Risk Management.
• Serves as a team leader or a facilitator for the department's QT teams.
• Evaluates work loads and prioritizes work schedules to accomplish work in a timely manner.
• Reviews all reports that pertain to incineration, preventive maintenance, boiler operation, medical gas levels, etc.
• Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Remains mentally alert and maintains concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods, at times under stress. Maintains adaptability, flexibility, initiative, persistence, and efficiency of time management and action.
• Does not pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Provides safe, efficient, competent care to population assigned. Meets MMC Environment of Care Standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education:          

None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to an Associate’s degree.  Preference may be given to individuals possessing an Associate’s degree in a directly-related field from an accredited college or university.

Minimum Experience:         

Four to six (4-6) years of progressive experience in maintenance work, with supervisory and management responsibilities are required. Must have a working knowledge of all power plant operations.  Must be familiar with computers and computer operations.
