Registered Radiation Technologist, Radiation Oncology

Weekdays 07:45-14:45. No weekends. No Holidays

Job Objectives:

Applies ionizing radiation to patients in accordance with dose prescription and instructions of radiation oncologist.

Responsibilities

  • Correctly positions patient for treatment using linear accelerators and appropriate blocks, trays, wedges, charts and treatment factors.
  • Observes patient for unusual reactions and events.
  • Observes all radiation safety measures.
  • Schedules outpatient treatment times and ambulance transportation for inpatients.
  • Secures and maintains supplies.
  • Assists with simulation of patients.
  • Correctly observes radiation safety measure for patient and personnel.
  • Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient identification on a daily basis.
  • Explains to patient the procedures, the means of communication during treatment, and the procedure to follow if an emergency arises during treatment.
  • Prepares room and equipment for patient needs according to treatment prescription regarding immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, use of custom blocks, etc.
  • Maintains constant visual and/or audible communication with the patients during treatment.
  • Maintains a daily record of machine warm-up procedure and properly enters information into the physics computer before treating the first patient of the day.
  • Prepares daily outpatient schedule for the following day before the end of shift; totals daily treatments and records on back of daily patients' treatment schedules at the end of each day.
  • Maintains patient treatment logbook.
  • NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned.
  • HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others.  Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population assigned.  Must demonstrate competency of the unit specific functions described in the performance continuum, skill lists and/or standards. 

Qualifications

Education/Knowledge/Skills:

Must be a graduate of a school of radiation therapy approved by the American Medical Association Committee on Allied Health, Education and Accreditation.  Competency evaluations will be given on treatment set-up and other skills.  These will assess ability to apply knowledge in machine malfunctions, treatment set-up and potential patient problems.  Must be able to apply special techniques in planning and implementing patient treatment.  Must be able to perform accurate and precise work in the time span scheduled for patient procedures.  Must be familiar with organization and function of radiation oncology department, regulations, policies and procedures to provide maximum coordination of patient care.  Special knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult and geriatric patients is essential. 

 

Minimum Experience:

No previous experience is necessary. 

 

Licensure/Certifications:

Must hold current registration or have documentation of reapplication for registration as a radiation therapist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
