Our door-to-balloon times for heart attack patients are below the national average, and our hip fracture center offers advanced diagnosis, surgery and recovery procedures for hip patients.

 

Department Description:

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Fort Sanders Regional is a 15 bay fast paced, team driven unit that serves a wide variety of postoperative patients.  Our team recovers the majority of our surgical patients from our 17 suite ORs.  In addition, we provide Phase I recovery care to patients requiring general anesthesia from other procedural areas.  Our team consists of RNs, perioperative technicians and unit secretaries.

 

Nursing responsibilities include some preoperative but mostly postoperative Phase I recovery care.  Nurses are trained in Phase I recovery, working as a team with our anesthesiologists to meet safe criteria for discharge to the next phase of care.  Our department is open from 6 AM-11 PM, Monday-Friday with holiday, after hours and weekend call coverage.  Call coverage for RNs is 4 weeknight calls per 6 weeks.  Weekend call coverage is 1 12 hour day call Saturday or Sunday and 1 12 hour night call Saturday or Sunday per 6 weeks.  Holiday call is on a yearly rotating schedule.

 

Position Summary:

Provides supportive para-nursing functions in the Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit and Patient Holding Area.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile field.
  • Illustrates proper technique for transporting and positioning patients safely.
  • Displays understanding of proper body mechanics.
  • Demonstrate special or bed positions such as Morgan Pelvic, Andrews Frame, etc.
  • Recognize the area of surgical prep (clean or sterile).
  • Assists in cleaning of rooms to include removing all trash, linen and mopping of rooms, suctions liners following isolizer.
  • Maintains, cleans and stocks scrub areas to include sterilizer.
  • Assist in daily and weekly cleaning of or to include autoclaves and solution cabinets.
  • Demonstrates proper technique for surgical skins preps.
  • Demonstrates proper technique for urinary catheterization.
  • Demonstrates proper technique for surgical hand scrub.
  • Demonstrates proper procedure for gowning and gloving.
  • Assists with creation and maintenance of sterile field.
  • Acts as third scrub under direction of a surgical technologist, RN, or physician.
  • Orders supplies and maintains par levels as directed.
  • Assists with formation of nursing assistant time schedule.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, BP and intake-output measurements.
  • Assists in and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
  • Provides general care such as positioning, lifting or turning patients; assisting in use of bedpan, urinal or commode; ambulating patient; pre-operative supportive care; and application/removal of abdominal binder and anti-ambolism stockings.
  • Assist patient with handling and care of clothing and other personal property through out their hospital stay.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: 

None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.  Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED.

 

Minimum Experience:

One (1) year of health care related experience required.
