Position Summary:  

Directs/Provides Athletic Training services and care on behalf of Covenant Health’s Sports Medicine Outreach program. The ideal candidate possesses the experience, decision-making ability, and clinical skills to make injury assessments based on evidence-based injury evaluation techniques.  This position reports to the Director of Sports Medicine services within Covenant Health as well as the College/University Athletic Director.

Responsibilities

  • Provides/Directs Athletic Training services for designated College or University as part of Covenant Health’s community outreach programs. This includes compliance with institutional, athletic conferences, governing rules and regulations provided by the NAIA/NCAA.
  • Provides/Directs the development and implementation of a successful intercollegiate athletic training program. This includes budget management, planning, organization, coordination, and management of health care needs to intercollegiate student-athletes.  Schedule management for team practices, games & tournaments.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of computer technology associated with student-athlete health care. This includes professional documentation of initial injury/health encounters, treatment visits, and associated provider prescription for care.
  • Maintains accurate recordkeeping of injuries and treatment of injuries and works with school officials to complete insurance claim forms for sports injuries.
  • Incumbent oversees the coordination and processing of medical insurance plans through the claims process.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the operation of the College/University Athletic Training facilities.
  • Incumbent will have direct supervision over any assistant Athletic Trainers, PRN Athletic Trainers, or Student helpers that work in the college/university Athletic Training department.
  • Incumbent shall utilize appropriate, evidence based clinical techniques to effectively assess and treat athletic injuries within the scope of their training, certification, & licensure.
  • Incumbent reviews medical records for conditions associated with cardiac related myopathies, general medical review, sickle cell trait review, as well as care planning for these conditions.
  • Incumbent shall perform injury/health evaluations, treatment, rehabilitation, and treatment. Incumbent will be competent in the use of therapeutic modalities such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, TENS, hydrotherapy, moist heat, and other related modalities for the care of athletic injuries within their scope of practice and licensure.
  • Incumbent will have oversight of the institutional drug screening program within the rules and guidelines provided by the NAIA/NCAA.
  • Incumbent works under the direction of the treating medical provider and under the guidelines defined by Covenant Health’s sports medicine program. This includes State laws and their application to student-athlete healthcare. 
  • Incumbent shall coordinate Doctor’s appointments related to athletic injuries and conditions. General medicine, Orthopedic, Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Women’s health, and Physical/Occupational therapies. 
  • Must be an effective communicator and develop professional contacts within community. This includes area physicians, mid-level providers, and other health care professionals. Integrates within the local medical community to improve sports medicine services. Must have the ability to communicate at all levels, to include Physicians, Surgeons, Mid-Level Providers, Parents, Coaches, and Administrators.
  • Participates in annual education presentations to athletes, coaches, & administrators about sports injury prevention and care.
  • Assists in the coordination of pre-participation health screenings. Assists school administration in the collection and review of medical health related conditions. Reviews medical conditions, their treatment, and care with Parents, Coaches, and Administrators.
  • Works with clinicians at local therapy clinics to transition athletes back to play and implements on-site treatment plans at school when possible.
  • Administers baseline and post injury concussion testing. Must be familiar with TN State law as it relates to concussions. Must follow and complete all return to play protocols for concussions. Consults with the treating provider. Completes all documentation and reports in a timely manner.
  • Reviews standard operating procedures for the sports medicine program. Consults with Director and Medical Directors for guidance if indicated.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:           

None specified; will accept any combination for formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a Master’s degree. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a Master’s degree in a directly-related field from an accredited college or university.

 

Minimum Experience:         

Ten (10) years of experience.

 

Licensure Requirement:      

Must have and maintain Tennessee State licensure as an athletic trainer and Board of Certification (BOC) certification for the Athletic Trainer.
