Laboratory Supervisor, General Laboratory

Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift

Laboratory supervisor for busy centralized outpatient lab

Lab hours are Mon-Fri 8a-10p; no holidays or weekends

Position Summary:

The Laboratory Supervisor will provide managerial support for phlebotomists, medical, laboratory assistants and secretary/transcriptionist.  This includes scheduling, personnel management, conflict resolution, assignment of responsibility and overall responsibility for ensuring that all work is completed properly within a reasonable time frame.  Responsible for computer entry of laboratory results performed at off-site laboratories.  Responsible for training new employees in subordinate positions.  Responsible overall for workflow for both inpatient and outpatient testing.

Responsibilities

  • Selects test methodology appropriate for the clinical use of test results. These decisions are made in conjunction with the Medical Director.
  • Verifies test procedures performed and establishes the test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and system.
  • In conjunction with the Medical Director, establishes a quality control program appropriate for the tests performed and establishes the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance. Ensures that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process.
  • Implements and adheres to the Laboratory quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performance. Reviews and evaluates data on a routine basis.  Prepares monthly QC reports for pathologist review.
  • Ensures that patient results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
  • Identifies training needs and assures that each individual performing tests receives appropriate, regular in-service training.
  • Resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications, and documents all actions. Operates, maintains and troubleshoots department equipment. –3 hrs/wk
  • Problem solving and trouble shooting in regards to specimen collection.
  • Personnel management (scheduling, evaluations, interviewing, training, etc.).
  • Computer entry and tracking of test results performed at off-site laboratories.
  • Prioritizing and scheduling of daily work flow.
  • Computer system support (daily maintenance, trouble-shooting, etc.)
  • Perform difficult phlebotomies.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Attend meetings as required and participates on committees as directed. Attends and serves on professional/civic service organizations as hospital representative.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:           

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

 

Minimum Experience:         

One to two (1-2) years clinical laboratory experience including familiarity with computer systems, medical terminology and phlebotomy

 

Licensure Requirement:      

Licensed as medical technologist by the State of Tennessee.  Supervisor’s License is preferred.
