Emergency Department:

At Parkwest Medical Center we strive to provide outstanding patient care during emergency situations. Our 39-bed Emergency Department provides care to patients experiencing medical emergencies, acute illnesses, and minor trauma. Staff work in a fast-paced environment to quickly assess conditions and stabilize patients in life-threating emergencies such as stroke, cardiac events, or severe injuries as well as less urgent medical issues. The Emergency Department sees around 140 patient visits per day.

 

Our staff members include RNs, Paramedics, LPNs, ED Techs and Health Unit Coordinators. Our department is high-energy, team-oriented, customer satisfaction focused. We currently use a self-scheduling model that covers a six-week period. Staff work three 12-hour shifts per week, with an every-other-weekend rotation and two Mondays per month. Our night shift RN staff enjoy extra weekends off, as we employ traditional night weekend Baylor RN staff.

Position Summary:  

Functions as a specialized direct patient caregiver in the Emergency Department, performing tasks to assist nurses and providers. Performs hands-on care, specified technical tasks, and coordinates communications on the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Enters and updates the ED tracking board promptly to communicate with staff.
  • Document/maintain patient record as appropriate.
  • Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, oxygen saturation, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
  • Completes all items / activities on “TECH CHECKLIST of DAILY ACTIVITIES” as applicable.
  • Orders patient care supplies and keeps patient care supplies stocked in proper amounts in rooms, carts and other areas as appropriate.
  • Cleans and wraps instruments to transport to sterile processing with ability to correctly identify and replace proper surgical instruments on appropriate trays.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe environment, which may include checking equipment daily for proper function and reporting equipment that is out of order, appropriate handling of linen and storing of supplies.
  • Gathers equipment for O2 set up. Checks O2 for connection and proper placement.
  • Sets up suction equipment and checks for proper function.
  • Promptly answers patient call lights and responds to patient requests.
  • Reports observed changes in patient condition to nurse or provider.
  • Assists with transportation of patients to other areas of the facility.
  • Prepares wounds for provider as directed. Cleans and dresses wounds appropriately.
  • Application of splints.
  • Applies immobilizers and ace bandages; fits patient for crutches.
  • Performs tasks such as ROM, assists with ambulatory devices as specified by the patients' plan of care.
  • Assists provider with pelvic exams.
  • Assists in triage with vital signs.
  • Ambulates, and assists patients in and out of bed, into wheelchairs and transport when necessary (on oxygen if required).
  • Empty canisters, urine bags, bedpans and emesis basins and record intake and output.
  • Provides general care such as positioning, lifting or turning patients; assisting in use of bedpan, urinal or commode; preoperative supportive care; and anti-embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
  • Collects urine, stool and sputum specimen as ordered.
  • Performs phlebotomy. To include correct labeling using two patient identifiers, maintenance of lab-draw supplies, rotating and restocking.
  • Performs INT removal per nursing or LIP direction.
  • Performs suture / staple removal at nurse or LIP direction.
  • Performs EKG.
  • Employs all established infection control policies including standard precautions, transmission-based isolation precautions, OSHA standards, safety measures, and proper body mechanics in performance of job.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competency in providing for age-specific needs of the population served.
  • Helps maintain clean and orderly patient and work environment.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

 

Minimum Experience:

One (1) years’ experience as an EMT, HUC, LPN, MA, or PCA/CNA OR must meet licensure requirement below. 

 

Licensure Requirement:

CPR required. If less than one (1) years’ experience, must have current EMT registry or license, LPN, MA, or CNA certification at time of hire/promotion or be a student in an accredited nursing education program. Student must have successfully completed fundamental clinical skills portion of the program (1st semester of clinicals).
