Full time, 80 Hours per pay period, Night shift

Position Summary:

Performs routine and complex tests in blood bank, serology-urinalysis, coagulation, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology using various manual and automated approved procedures.  Assists technical specialists with technical management of assigned sections.

Responsibilities

  • Performs high quality work with speed and accuracy.
  • Assumes responsibility for proper quality control measures.
  • Performs and records quality control data and reports results accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Troubleshoots instruments and reagent problems and performs preventative maintenance as scheduled.
  • Properly operates equipment, performs preventative maintenance and records action taken.
  • Assists in the training of MLT students and new employees as assigned by the technical specialist.
  • Notifies physician or designated nurse when panic values are observed in testing.
  • Exercises use of cost conscious methods as set forth by the technical specialist (use of time, punctuality, supplies).
  • Assumes responsibility for the area in the absence of the technical specialist.
  • Performs work using independent judgment and organizational skills to meet established deadlines.
  • Collects blood specimens as necessary using established techniques for the various age groups assigned.
  • Performs and documents Quality Control functions under the direction of the technical specialist.
  • Assists technical specialist with work assignments and technical oversight of testing staff.
  • Remains mentally alert and maintains concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods, at times under stress. Maintains adaptability, flexibility, initiative, persistence, and efficiency of time management and action.
  • Does not pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Provides safe, efficient, competent care to population assigned. Meets MMC Environment of Care Standards.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Education:          

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

 

Minimum Experience:         

Must possess knowledge obtained by formal education, previous experience, or on-the-job training of instruments and quality control methods for those procedures assigned.  Must possess knowledge of blood bank, hematology, serology, urinalysis, chemistry, and microbiology obtained by formal education. Must have or acquire the computer skills necessary to perform assigned duties. 

 

Licensure Requirements:    

Must be licensed in the State of Tennessee as a medical technologist.
