Position Summary:

 

Under the direct and indirect supervision of the Lead Therapist, the Medical Physicist, and the Radiation Oncologist, administers therapeutic radiation to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. To enhance departmental operations through positive relations with patients, patients family members and visitors, physician support and staff interaction. Use independent judgment to maintain continuity of patient care of the highest standards, in an efficient, caring manner.

Responsibilities

  • Position patients (utilizing treatment devices when prescribed) for treatment with accuracy according to prescription.
  • Administer prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards.
  • Check radiation therapy equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Prepare and construct equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, and protection devices.
  • Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and patient identification.
  • Educate, prepare and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physicians’ advice regarding treatment reactions and post-treatment care.
  • Enter patient data into computer and set controls to operate and adjust equipment and regulate dosage.
  • Observe and reassure patients during and after treatment and report unusual reactions to physician.
  • Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others.
  • Maintain accurate records, (in patient’s chart and electronically), including such information as radiation dosages, elapsed days, equipment settings, appropriate charge capture, and patients’ reactions.
  • Ability to work independently, utilizing self direction to prioritize the workload and carry out the tasks with flexibility for volume variances.
  • Maintain treatment schedules, gives proper notification to patients of treatment times and notifies patients of any scheduling delays.
  • Troubleshoot problems with equipment, patient medical conditions and patient satisfaction situations.
  • Train and supervise student or newly hired radiation therapists.
  • Follow infection control and universal precaution guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and speaking to convey information effectively.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:           

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

 

Minimum Experience:         

Entry Level

 

Licensure Requirement:      

Must have and maintain ARRT (T) within six (6) months post graduate program. CPR required.
