Job Objectives:
Assist anesthesia staff within the limits that training and skills permit and as assigned. Provide assistance to nursing staff in caring for assigned patients.

Education/Knowledge/Skills:
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required. Additional training in the nursing field is preferred. A working knowledge of aseptic technique is required. Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly. Must be capable of understanding and following instructions provided on the proper care and maintenance of equipment. Must comprehend and put into practice all general hospital policies and procedures as well as those pertaining to the surgery department. Must have the ability to participate and function usefully in surgical and in emergency situations. At the end of the orientation period, must have the ability to recognize all anesthesia instruments and equipment. Must demonstrate the ability to disinfect and maintain fiberoptic equipment. Shall be responsible for complete room turnover and be competent in: setting up pressure transducers for arterial lines; bloodwarmers; rapid infusers; and diagnostics; plus minor maintenance of the anesthesia machines and datascope monitors. Shall be responsible for calibration and maintenance of capnographs and oxygen meters.
For staff involved in the care of age-specific groups, knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients is essential. Special knowledge is required in growth and development needs of pediatric/geriatric patients where applicable.
Experience:
Prior completion of the anesthesia modules for anesthesia technician is required, or successful completion of the modules during the first two weeks of the orientation program may be allowed, depending upon the circumstances. Three months’ previous experience as an anesthesia technician is preferred.
Licensure/Certifications:
Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is required. BLS
