Job Objectives:

Provide ancillary assistance to patient care providers who have the responsibility to deliver patient services in a designated service area.

Responsibilities

  • Transports/lifts/moves patients to appropriate areas in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort.
  • Adheres to instructions issued by RN/LPN and to established hospital routines.
  • Observes and reports to the RN/LPN any physical or psychological change in the patient's condition.
  • Helps maintain cleanliness of nursing areas and of the patient's environment.
  • Cleans and assembles equipment.
  • Obtains/delivers items used for patient care.
  • Restocks, organizes and maintains the tank room if responsibility specific to unit(s) worked.
  • Reports to RN for further assignments when previously assigned tasks completed.When assigned as a sitter:
    • Utilize white boards for input and communication to help care for patient(s)
    • Know and be familiar with suicide/homicidal precautions
    • Familiarize and understand restraints
    • Reinforce safety precautions on all patients
    • Always communicate any changes in patient’s condition to nurse
    • Be familiar with falls safety risks
  • NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned.
  • HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others.  Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population assigned.  Must demonstrate competency of the unit specific functions described in the performance continuum, skill lists and/or standards.

Qualifications

Education/Knowledge/Skills:

Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly. Must be able to perform simple arithmetic functions. Must complete an in-hospital training course in addition to general and unit specific orientation. Must have knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in duties related to bedside patient care service; understanding of standard techniques used in providing personal services for patients and in caring for equipment and supplies; and good understanding of asepsis and sterile techniques to avoid infection of patients and self or contamination of equipment and supplies. For staff involved in the care of age-specific groups, knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients is essential. Special knowledge is required in growth and development needs of pediatric/geriatric patients where applicable.

 

Experience:

Prior experience with patient-related care is preferred.

 

Licensure/Certifications:

Must be currently certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or be recertified during orientation period. Can be obtained once hired.
