Radiation Oncology Dosimetrist

Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift

 

The Thompson Cancer Survival Center (TCSC) is looking for an outstanding medical dosimetrist to join the radiation oncology team at Covenant Health, which is the largest nonprofit provider of radiation therapy services in the state of Tennessee.  This opening is for a medical dosimetrist position at the Thompson Proton Center (TPC). The Thompson Proton Center treats between 40 and 65 patients per day on an IBA Proteus Plus three-room proton therapy clinic (2 gantries and 1 fixed beam).

 

The successful candidate will join a team of three radiation oncologists, four medical dosimetrists, five medical physicists, a medical dosimetry coordinator, and medical dosimetry interns. This position reports to an experienced dosimetry manager. The current dosimetry work schedule is one week on-site at the proton center followed by three weeks working remote. The department uses RayStation, Velocity, Mosaiq, and Radformation products. Remote collaboration with physicians, physicists, and dosimetrists is performed using Microsoft Teams.

 

Primary clinical responsibilities include robust proton pencil beam scanning treatment planning using single field optimization (SFO) and multiple field optimization (MFO); Dosimetrists also work with the financial approval staff to ensure timely insurance authorization including the creation of three-dimensional (3D) or intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) comparison plans.

    

The larger Covenant Health Medical Physics Team includes 14 ABR physicists, 4 physics assistants, 12 certified dosimetrists, 2 medical physics residents, and numerous graduate students from the CAMPEP program at the University of Tennessee. In addition to the Thompson Proton Center, Covenant Health currently has 5 Varian linacs, 4 Elekta linacs, 3 Flexitron HDR systems, a and a GammaKnife Icon.

Position Summary:

Assist Medical Physicist in providing accurate and timely Dosimetry treatment planning and dose calculation. Perform quality assurance procedures according to established standards and practices. Provide interface and continuity between CT, MRI, Medical Physics, Simulation and Treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate tracking of the dose delivered versus dose prescription for all patients.
  • Plan treatment techniques by means of computer and/or manual calculations, with follow up to ensure actual verses planned treatments.
  • Perform patient’s dose calculations in radiation therapy chart-verify the mathematical accuracy.
  • Perform dose calculations for all brachytherapy procedures, including implants.
  • Assist Radiation Therapist in implementation of treatment plan.
  • Assist Medical Physicist in planning and fabrication of custom shields and immobilization devices.
  • Provide assistance and technical guidance to Simulator Technologist for complicated setups.
  • Assist the Medical Physicist in machine calibrations and quality assurance.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

 

Minimum Experience:

Two (2) years’ experience in Dosimetry or related area.

 

Licensure Requirement:

Certified by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
