Position Summary:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a public safety professional that responds to medical emergencies in pre-hospital settings. Upon arrival, the EMT performs triage, initial survey, provides emergency care through careful assessment of the patient and recognizes injuries and illnesses. The EMT shall also gain knowledge of pre-existing medical conditions, previous medications, medical preference and identification of the patient.

• After proper training, the EMT may administer or use physician controlled devices for Treatment of anaphylaxis with epinephrine; airway management and/or oxygen administration with an esophageal pharengeotracheolumen airway (PTL); venipuncture and intravenous fluid therapy of normal saline solutions, dextrose and water solution and lactated ringer's solution, without admixtures.
• Render necessary emergency care through supportive assistance for conditions requiring transport for definitive medical care including medical emergencies, behavioral emergencies, illness, disease or infirmity.
• Reports essential information concerning the patient, the patient's medical condition and treatment to the medical personnel who assume responsibility for continuing care of the patient.
• Utilize EMS telecommunications for coordination and information exchange with EMS dispatchers, medical facilities, physician and systems users and shall conduct radio transmissions appropriately with regard for rules, regulations and procedures.
• Responsible for routine daily maintenance checks on the vehicle assigned to them and record results on the vehicle maintenance check list; properly clean and restock assigned vehicles after each call; refuel vehicle (at the designated service stations) after each call or when tank is less than 1/2 full.
• Adhere to the EMT dress code while on duty.
• Participate in teaching or inservice training when necessary to include 16 hours of inservice class time per year documented in writing and submitted to the EMS Manager.
• Local travel required.
• Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education:           

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.

Minimum Experience:         

Six (6) months of field experience on a certified ambulance.

Licensure Requirement:      

Current TN license as required to perform the duties of an EMT in the State of Tennessee. Employee must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license Class D with an “F” endorsement for up to 14 passenger vehicles, OR a Class “A”, “B”, or “C” with “P” endorsement for 15 passenger vehicles, depending on the driving needs of the facility. Employee must have state mandated minimum insurance coverage. Driving record must meet Covenant Health minimum standards at the date of hire and throughout employment tenure.
