Endoscopy Technologist - Non-Certified, Family Care Specialists

Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift

Position Summary: 

Facilitates patient care by assisting physicians and nursing staff before, during, and after endoscopic procedures. Under supervision, competently performs assigned cases in a given service/shift; may participate in difficult or complicated cases with assistance; and assists in competently performing endoscope re-processing.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of RN/MD, facilitates patient care by assisting endoscopist before, during, and after endoscopic procedures; follows unit standards and processes to deliver age-appropriate care for all patients; demonstrates accountability as an individual and team member in meeting patient/family needs; and participates in identifying cost-effective measures for clinical care.
  • Assists with planning, sets up, performs, and cleans up the assigned endoscopy procedure; demonstrates knowledge of equipment and instrumentation pertaining to case; safely operates specialty equipment which may be used in endoscopy cases (i.e., snares, hot biopsy forceps, alligator forceps, Resolution clips, etc.); maintains instruments and equipment integrity; performs room turn-over and terminal cleaning; and utilizes supplies in a cost effective manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles of clean technique; responsible for continuously monitoring for potential for cross-contamination in the patient care areas; and recognizes contamination and takes proper action to correct situation.
  • Demonstrates proper positioning techniques; knows the proper position for cases and understands the use of proper positioning aids to protect nerves and boney prominences and to maintain circulation; and assists endoscopist in splinting patients’ abdominal wall.
  • Identifies and communicates problems and variances from patient care goals and participates in finding solutions; uses available problem-solving techniques to resolve patient problems and follows through with health care team to implement solutions; clearly, efficiently, and confidently communicates significant information about patient care progress toward goals; and collaborates with peers.
  • Maintains professional development of self and participates in the development of others; assumes the responsibility for continuous learning and actively participates in in-services; acquires skills and competencies as required by the endoscopy unit; and continues to expand knowledge and skills required to perform cases within and outside the specialty area.
  • Maintains appropriate standards of competency; performs, with assistance, the majority of cases per service/shift in a competent manner; and may participate in difficult or complicated cases with assistance.
  • Demonstrates proper endoscope equipment reprocessing according to current standards. Assists with reprocessing logs and endoscope inventory and provides reprocessing competency check offs for the endoscopy department staff, manages endoscope send outs for repair, and keeps inventory of the frequency a scope is sent out for maintenance/repair.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority. Must complete module 1 of the SGNA Associates Program within three (3) months from the date the individual moved into the classification.

None

 

Licensure Requirement:

Certified surgery tech or SGNA GI Technical Specialist certification must be obtained within 18 months or CBSPD GI Endoscope Certification within 18 months.
