Covenant Medical Group is Covenant Health’s employed and managed medical practice organization, with more than 300 top Physicians and providers spanning the continuum of care in 20 cities throughout East Tennessee. Specialties include cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, infectious disease, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, occupational medicine, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, primary care, pulmonology, reproductive medicine, rheumatology, sleep medicine and urology.


Position Summary:

Under general supervision, responsible for compiling, analyzing, recording and reporting various financial/accounting data and transactions. Responsible for specific activities in budget preparation. Summarizes the results of cost and general accounting activities on a month-to-month and fiscal year basis. Prepares and issues accounting reports as well as special reports and summaries. Establishes cost comparisons to determine variances from the financial plan on cost estimates and develops factual commentary on variances. Interfaces with Covenant Health accounting staff, managers and administrators as well as external auditors and bankers.  May provide work leadership for less experienced professional accountants and accounting support personnel.

  • Responsible for identified phases of budget preparation process. Works closely with managers during process and throughout the year regarding operating variances; timing and scheduling issues and problems; normal and special analyses and reports; participation in data preparation and information for program reviews; and various related tasks and projects. Participates in data collection and analysis on 5-year budget projections. Studies and analyzes trends and projections for activities and functions within Covenant Health entities as well as with other organizations and the Health Care industry. Prepares reports, summaries and presentations on result.
  • Responsible for the preparation and analyses of a variety of summaries and reports on accounting and financial data including: monthly financial statements; 990 tax returns; monthly comprehensive statistical reports and summaries; and surveys, special studies, and special analyses. Insures that all data and reports are consistent with Hospital goals and objectives, and general accounting standards and practices.
  • Responsible for entering data to the computerized accounting system through standardized collection and distribution techniques. Develops system and procedures for processing data for uniformity in costing and information control and management. Oversees departmental (Hospital) input and output of data.  Prepares a variety of report, cost transfer documents, budget data, etc.
  • Interfaces with the Covenant Health accounting staff, Hospital administrators and managers as well as outside auditors and bankers on a full range of financial and accounting matters including: accounting and financial reports and analyses; special problems and issues; economic and/or cost trends and trend analyses; investments; pension data; price changes; etc.
  • Plans and organizes work to meet pre-established schedules and reporting deadlines. Insures that all analyses, reports and studies are consistent with schedules for financial planning and operational requirements.
  • Responsible for keeping abreast of developments in accounting/financial field; attends professional/society/business meetings as appropriate. Participates in in-house training and development activities including service on administrative and operational committees.
  • Participates in educational workshops for managers on: budget preparation and variance monitoring; financial operations; reports and analyses; schedules; and related matters.  Attends departmental meetings to explain/discuss financial reporting procedures and issues.
  • May provide work leadership and guidance for less experienced professional accountants and or accounting staff. Participates in Covenant Health-wide cross-training activities in accounting/finance to provide for personal development as well as program effectiveness and continuity.
  • Collaborate with the patient, physician and other care team members as part of a team based approach to overall patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.


Minimum Education:

B.S. in Accounting from an accredited academic program. 


Minimum Experience:

Requires a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience and sound knowledge of accounting principles and techniques as well as detailed knowledge of Hospital/Covenant Health procedures and policies relating to business/finance. Demonstrated communications and computer skills (strength in Lotus) are required.


Licensure Requirement:

None. A CPA is preferable
