The Director of Surgical Services directs, coordinates, and has 24-hour accountability for the operation of the surgical services division (Operating Rooms, Same Day Surgery, Pre-Admission Evaluation, PACU and Central Sterile Services) of a busy acute care hospitals' surgical services and perioperative departments. This Surgical Director opportunity is to develop and implement the strategic and operational plans for Surgical Services. Leads, supports, and supervises the Manager of Surgical Services. The Director facilitates the Perioperative Steering Team in cooperation with the Medical Director and Chief of Surgery. The Director evaluates employee work performance providing employee counseling and coaching in collaboration with the Managers and Human Resources. Collaborates with Human Resources in the recruitment and retention of employee partners within Surgical Services. Develops and maintains the clinical ladders for perioperative nursing and surgical technologists. Maintains and fosters a positive educational relationship with local colleges and universities to facilitate clinical rotations. The Director’s responsibility includes development and maintenance of an ongoing quality monitoring improvement program, including Lean Six Sigma projects, infection control and risk management initiative. The Director communicates and collaborates with other departments for problems identification and resolution. 

  • Ensures the delivery of quality patient care through the appropriate deployment of Nursing Services personnel.
  • Ensures the delivery of quality patient care through the establishment and dissemination of appropriate Standards.
  • Ensures the delivery of quality patient care through an effective program of orientation, in-service and continuing education for all levels of Nursing Services personnel.
  • Ensures the delivery of quality patient care through the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Interfaces with departments to facilitate optimum assignment of patients to available beds.
  • Develops, in conjunction with the CNO, methods for evaluating the quality of nursing care provided.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to Directors and staff in selected areas of clinical expertise.
  • Collaborates with quality, safety, risk, clinical education and physician leadership for partnering on development of root cause analysis action plans.


  • Minimum of five (5) years experience with organization and operation of a Surgical Services Department, required. 
  • Minimum of five to seven (5-7) years experience with nursing care techniques and methods of caring for the surgical patient according to AORN standards, required.
  • Track history of progressive leadership experience in Surgical Services, required.
  • Nursing degree, either Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), required.
  • An additional Masters degree, either in Nursing (MSN), Hospital Administration (MHA), or Business Administration (MBA) preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in good standing with Tennessee Board of Nursing.
  • CNOR or CSSM certification, highly preferred.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • BLS Recertification is required every two (2) years.
  • ACLS, preferred.
